Island-wide Police Crackdown: Over 30,000 Persons Inspected in 24 Hours

COLOMBO – Following the direct instructions of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Sri Lanka Police have intensified special operations across the country to curb criminal activities and narcotics distribution. According to an official communiqué released by the Police Media Division, a massive mobilization took place on March 9, 2026, targeting all police divisions and local stations.

The operation focused on identifying suspects linked to organized crime and executing pending warrants to ensure public safety and the rule of law.

Focus on Crime Prevention and Road Safety

The sheer scale of the operation is evident in the inspection of over 30,000 individuals in a single day. A significant milestone of the crackdown was the arrest of 411 individuals who were wanted under various court warrants, effectively addressing a large number of pending legal cases.

Simultaneously, the police maintained a heavy presence on the roads. The arrest of 183 drunk drivers and the recording of over 4,300 other traffic offenses highlight a strict “zero tolerance” policy aimed at reducing road accidents and ensuring disciplined commuting.
