The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) has successfully managed to contain an environmental threat posed to the Hikkaduwa and Peraliya coastal areas. Under the direct instructions of the Minister of Environment, Dr. Dammika Pathabanda, this mission has been recognized not just as a cleaning operation, but as a world-class scientific and operational intervention.
Immediate Response and Technical Expertise
Following reports of oil patches on March 07, 2026, MEPA immediately launched a joint 24-hour investigation and cleaning operation in collaboration with the Department of Coast Conservation. The operation was led by the Chairman of MEPA, Mr. Samantha Gunasekara, and the General Manager, Mr. Jagath Gunasekara.
Scientific Findings and Control
Technical investigations conducted by the MEPA identified that the spill was caused by barrels of **Shell Corena S2 P 100** oil that had washed ashore.
**Nature of the Substance:** This is a lubricant used for internal parts of air compressors and is not classified as a hazardous substance.
**Marine Life:** As of now, there have been no reports of harm to marine life, including fish or turtles, though MEPA continues to monitor the situation closely.
